Notes

Minton's, September 1947

In September 1947 the photographer and writer William P. Gottlieb went to Minton's Playhouse, on 118th Street, with Monk, who had been the house pianist there earlier in the decade.

Outside the club

The best-known picture is taken on the pavement under the sign: Monk with the trumpeters Howard McGhee and Roy Eldridge, and Teddy Hill, who ran the club. Inside, Gottlieb photographed Monk at the piano, in a beret and dark glasses, with McGhee leaning on the lid.

Gottlieb's photographs are in the Library of Congress. At his wish they entered the public domain in 2010.
