Helsinki, 25 April 1962

On 25 April 1962 the orchestra played the Kulttuuritalo, the House of Culture, in Helsinki, the day after a concert in Sweden. A photographer for Hufvudstadsbladet, the Swedish-language daily of Helsinki, was in the hall.

What the pictures show

Basie at the piano and on his feet beside it; the bass and the brass behind him; Benny Powell standing for a trombone solo; the trumpets; the saxophones; and Irene Reid, the band’s singer that spring, at the microphone.

Where they are now

The negatives are in the press archive of the Finnish Heritage Agency, which has published them under a free licence (CC BY 4.0). The photograph of the whole hall, on top of this note, is the stage seen from the back of the room.
